Henry Clay was born in 1671/72 Henrico County, Virginia. He was the son of Charles Clay and Hannah Wilson. Henry and Mary Mitchell, daughter of William Mitchell and Elizabeth (--?--), were married 1707/8 Chesterfield County, Virginia. Henry Clay died 3 August 1760, Chesterfield County, Virginia at age 88 years, apparently with a "death rattle" later described as "rattles and rales." and was buried near Swift Creek, Chesterfield County, Virginia. However, the stone is now on the grounds of a public school, having been removed from the original cemetery some time ago.
