Ernest Graves was born on 5 December 1852 San Luis Obispo, California. in the old mission building adjoining the Catholic Church.1 He was the son of William James Graves and Maria de la Soledad Pico. Ernest and Lucinda Holloway were married 27 March 1878.2 Ernest Graves died 13 July 1900 at age 47 years, 7 months and 8 days, "Ernest Graves, a well known San Luis Obispo lawyer, is dead." Was Well Known Throughout the State as a Criminal Lawyer
SAN LUIS OBISPO, July 13. – Attorney Ernest Graves died this morning at this home here after an illness of two weeks. Deceased was 48 years old, and for 24 years has been the most prominent lawyer in this county. He was a son of Superior Judge William J Graves. He was born her in 1852 and has lived here ever since. He has been connected with the most important cases in the county. His reputation was that of a successful criminal lawyer throughout the state. His constitution, ever vigorous and robust, broke down two years ago after a severe attack of pneumonia. From that time until his death he has been growing constantly weaker
For two terms from 1879 to 1883 he was District Attorney of San Luis Obispo County and since retiring from that office has been the acknowledged leader of the San Luis Obispo bar.
The local bar association this afternoon passed resolutions of respect to the memory of the deceased attorney. Flags throughout the city are at half mast in his memory.3
