     Sarah Joyce Fentem was born on 24 January 1846. She was the daughter of Richard Fentem and Clarissa Palmer. Sarah Joyce Fentem died 31 May 1931, Fresno County, California at age 85 years, 4 months and 7 days1 and was buried Hills Ferry Cemetery, Newman, Stanislaus County, California.1
     She was Sarah J is listed as a "Dressmaker" in Troy in the 1870 census, where she is living in the household of the Deputy Sherriss, William Coose (who owns $6000 in real estate and $1000 in personal estate), her brother-in-law. With them is her mother, Clarissa, 52.

In The Troy Herald, an article dated 9 July 1873, is noted, "We have two millinery stores -- Miss S J Fentem and Mrs M Sedlacek, who keep on hand many things necessary to the lovelier and better sex, a list of which it would be folly in us to attempt to give."

Sarah J (Sallie) moved with her mother to Stanislas County, California, and continued the business until the late 1880s. in 1870.2,3
