Catherine Nowlin died 24 December 1830, Pittsylvania County, Virginia at age 52 years, 1 month and 28 days, of apoplexy.1,3

Departed this life in the 51st year of her age, Mrs. Catharine Berger, consort of Mr. J Berger of the county of Pittsylvania, Va. Could the unwearied attention of her physicians, or the kind and affectionate solicitude evinced by the relatives and frineds have abailed, Mrs. Berger would yet be that agreeable and devoted companion, affectionate mother, and humane mistress which has ever marked her course through life. In the death of Mrs Berger, society has lost one of its brightest ornaments and the church of one of its most pious members. She was a member of the Baptist Church for 34 years, during which time she placed her whole trust and reliance in the merits and atonement of her Lord and Savious. As the writer of this notice was present at the death of this "israelite Indeed," he must be permitted to say that it was a scene the best calculated he has ever witnessed to convince the sinner of the truths of the Christian Religion. From the nature of her disease (apoplexy) her mind was quite impaired on all subjects save that of Religion but on that subject her mind was as clear as if the system felt not the least pain. At the bed side she exhorted sinners to flee from the wrath to come -- the Christian she encouraged a closer walk with God -- sinners were cut to the heart and made to cry for mercy, while the Christian rejoiced that though their mother and friend was just about to depart to another and better world, they shouted at the prospect of again meeting her where parting will be no more. But a few moments before her spirit took its flight, one of her daughters for whom she had often prayed, professed to know the Lord Jesus in the pardon of her sins -- and while a halo of glory seemed to encircle her dying bed her spirit took its flight from its tenement of clay at a quarter before 1 o'cluck on Friday Morning 24 inst 1830. "Let me die the death of the rightous, and let my last end be like him."

The Lynchburg Virginian, Feb. 7, 1831, p. 3, c. 4.4 She was buried before 28 May 1831 Berger Cemetery, Pittsylvania County, Virginia; "Caty Berger's funeral preached by James Kelly & Joel L Adams 28 May 1831."5
     She has been called Caty.
