GEORGE N. MADDOCK

George Nixon Maddock, son of Franklin and Lucy Maddock, was born near Umatilla, Oregon, on the 8th of November, 1870. When a few years old the family moved to a ranch near Heppner, Oregon.
After the death of his father his mother moved to McMinnville, Oregon, for the purpose of educating her children. At the age of 16 he entered McMinnville college and graduated five years later. Having decided to take up the practice of law as a profession, his mother sent him to Lexington, Virginia, where he entered Washington and Lee University, graduating two years later at the head of his class. During his stay there he paid most of his expenses by taking scholastic prizes.
On returning west he practiced law in Goldendale several years. After the death of his mother he went to Spokane and practiced there for some time when he decided to give up the practice of law and go into business. For this purpose he went to Bend, Oregon, where he has remained most of the time since, spending winters at Maryhill with his sister, Mrs. W.T. Jordan.
He was an unusually great reader and while in Bend spent most of his time in the Public Library. His reading was of a high character and he was doubtless one of the best informed men in general history and biography in the entire country. He was a man of high ideals, quiet in disposition, very retiring and spent a large portion of his time with his books. For the past several years his health has been very poor and he died suddenly at 11 o'clock last Wednesday morning at the home of his sister, while sitting in his chair reading history.
Funeral service was conducted at 10 o'clock last Friday morning, June 16th, at the residence of Mrs. Jordan, by Rev. H.P. Andrews, and the body was laid to rest in the cemetery at Maryhill.
He is survived by his sister, Mrs. W.T. Jordan, and one brother, Dr. Louis Maddock, of San Andreas, California.

He was buried Maryhill Cemetery, Maryhill, Washington.
