Richard and Louise Glover Root, daughter of George Harvey Root and Mabel Clarissa Glover, were married 25 October 1948 Multnomah County, Oregon.1 Richard L. Godfrey died 15 February 1998, in Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon at age 94 years, 10 months and 13 days.

Mr. Godfrey was born April 2, 1903, in Sterling, Ill. He moved to Oregon as a toddler and attended schools in Roseburg, Wendling and Eugene. He attended the University of Oregon. In 1928, he was hired as a sportswriter and began a career that spanned 44 years at The Oregonian. In 1934, he began a 20-year stint in the ''cop shop,'' at Southwest Second and Oak, where he covered the city police, courts, jails and emergency hospitals.
During that time, he reported the rough-and-tumble, legendary crime and mayhem of a colorful, wide-open era in Portland history. He remained a police reporter until the 1950s. Before he retired in 1972, he also served as a court, general news and crime reporter and as business editor.
He married Louise Root in 1948.
Survivors include his wife; daughters, Martha Dixon of Portland and Anne Dupuy of Gaithersburg, Md; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
