      From Charles' book:
buried with military honors,
Whitehall Cemetery; fought under Zachary Taylor in the battle of Buena Vista, 22/23 Feb. 1847, enlisting first in the
same cavalry unit as his cousin Alexander Arnold, but during the first day of battle had his horse shot from under him.
He continued to fight with the infantry and his cousin with the cavalry, thus they became separated. When the battle
ended, each one, went out on the field of battle after night fall looking at the faces of the dead to find each other. Raising
up their lamps, they found each other. Arnold continued with the cavalry. After his service, Richard was in poor health
and died of consumption at the home of his sister, Elizabeth Withers [Reminiscences of Henry C. Withers, p. 4; letter written to Elizabeth Bruce Withers 5 Feb. 1885 from Henry Clay Withers, Carrollton, Il.].
