Death of W A Trent of Somerville

The many friends of Mr W A Trent will be pained and shocked to hear of his sudden death which occurred Monday night about 8 o’clock, His health had not been good for some time but daring the day he appeared in better spirits About 4:30 o’clock be purchased two ounces of laudanum and retired to bis room over Hobson & Moorman’s drugstore. His room-mate Mr Trent Bonner want up a few miuutes after 5 o’clock to get his violin. He saw Mr Trent on tbe bed but did not notice anything wrong with him. Going to supper he returned about 7 o’clock, lighted a lamp and began to read when the peculiar breathing of his cousin attracted his attention and he went to his side. He fonnd him to be !n a cold perspiration and on attempting to arouse him he could not do so. At once he came down into the drug store and informed Mr J D Hobson who recollecting the sale of tbe laudanum feared that an overdose had been taken. Dr Robertson and Dr Ealy were summoned and in a short while reached his bedside. Dr Harris came shortly afterward but all the physicians could not avail as death had already set in. He died quietly without a struggle. From all tbe facts which could be gathered it appear that he was feeling badly and took a dose of laudanum but the quantity not having the desired effect he probably repeated it and then drunk on the drug he swallowed tbe entire potion. He was found on tho bed undressed where he had laid down after taking the stuff. A coroner’s jury was empaneled and after hearing all the testimony the verdict was “that the deceased came to his death from an overdose of laudanum” Mr Trent was a son of the late W C Trent and was well end favorably known in and around this section.
He was not employed in the 1880 census. William, 26, and Royal, 20, are listed as "at home," while their sister, Bettie, 24 is listed as a school teacher. The younger children are listed as "at school." in 1880.
