Constantine Bruce

#1494, b. circa 1787, d. after 1850
Father*John Bruce b. 30 Apr 1748, d. 1827
Mother*Elizabeth Clay b. 13 Jan 1755, d. 1832
Constantine Bruce was born circa 1787 Augusta County, Virginia. He was the son of John Bruce and Elizabeth Clay. Constantine Bruce married Sophia Williams 16 March 1829.1 Constantine Bruce died after 1850.2
Constantine, 53, is living with the William Robinson family in Point Precinct, Calhoun County, Illinois. He is one of five males in the household listed as "laborer."2

Although there is a marriage between Constantine and Sophia Williams, in 1829, Garrard County, they apparently didn't stay long.

The famous "family tradition," so loved by some of our chroniclers, including ... in the Lineage of Sophia Elizabeth Kavanaugh-Bear, "Constantine Bruce (twin of Alexander) was born April 15, 1797; married Sophia Williams of Garrard County. 'He was the Daniel Boone of the family. He cared only for the dog and the gun and loved the chase more than he did the business pursuits of men.' -- History of Lewis County, Kentucky, Rev. O G Reagan. He left Lewis County in 1834, moving to Illinois." (Bruce, p 63).

We should note here that one Constantine Bruce pantented land in Montgomery County, Missouri, very near Henry Palmer Twp 049N Range 002W.
Henry was in 002W, section 10 (Lincoln County), while Constantine and David H Witcher were in 003W section 6 (Montgomery County), Roughly ten miles apart, with a county line between.

The "Illinois" reference may simply be wrong. The Missouri property is only about twenty-five miles from the Mississippi River...across from the state of Illinois.

Telling? In 1850, Sophia Bruce married Moses Bend/Bond, in Lincoln County, Missouri. Moses was born in Virginia, Sophia in Kentucky, according to the 1850 census of Lincoln County.

And, sure enough, Moses Bond had patents in 049N - 001W, sections 29 and 30 in Lincoln County.3
