Wild Cayuses
Colton Newsletter: John Boyles and Geo. Parks held their spring roundup of horses on the brakes of Snake River Sunday. They were assisted by a number of local rough riders and covered the bluffs from opposite Lewiston to Steptoe landing. It was hard work for men and horses, and when the large herd started down the narrow defile at Evans' bar, something frightened them and they stampeded back for the bluffs. The cayuses were wild as coyotes, and the riders on their tired horses couldn't hold them. Most of the herd got away, but 160 were landed safely in the corral. These horses are to be shipped to Chicago. Two agents have been here and contracted for ten carloads and will probably want as many more. The roundup will be held over again in a few days when a larger number of riders will participate.
