Booker Smith Jefferson

     Booker Smith Jefferson was born on 3 February 1819 Pittsylvania County, Virginia.1,2 Booker and Lucy Anna Berger, daughter of George Berger, were married 14 April 1846. Booker and Catherine Rainey (Berger) McHaney, daughter of Jacob Berger and Catherine Nowlin, were married 3 August 1858 Montgomery County, Missouri. Booker Smith Jefferson died 6 October 1899, Montgomery County, Missouri at age 80 years, 8 months and 3 days.2

Nov 6, 1899, Booker Smith Jefferson, died at the home of his son, Alexander, near Montgomery City. Born in Pittsylvania Co., VA. Feb 3, 1819 and grew to manhood there. In 1840 in company with Washington Graves, he emigrated to MO; in Apr 1846 he married Lucy Ann Berger who died 12 years later. They had 7 children, 5 survive; Mrs. J. F. Graves, Montgomery City; Alexander Jefferson, Montgomery City; Mrs. Frank Tippett, K. C; William B. Jefferson, Hereford, OR; Mrs. John B. Bomar, K. C.. In Aug 1858 he married Mrs. Catharine R. McHaney, and they had 2 children, both surviving: Mrs. O. H. Avery of Troy, MO; and Thomas Berger Jefferson of Piru City, CA. From 1849, he spent 2 years in the gold fields of California; from 1878 he spent 5 years looking after mining interests in Colorado, spending some time at his home in Missouri. From 1886 to 1893 he lived in Kansas. At the age of 40 years he professed faith in Christ and joined Zion Baptist Church in Montgomery Co., MO. Buried in Montgomery City Cemetery. Tribute by R. S.
