Joseph Ashcraft1

#4486, b. 5 January 1872, d. 17 July 1906
Mother*Nancy Catherine Simmons b. 3 Jul 1842, d. 15 Sep 1934
Joseph Ashcraft was born on 5 January 1872 Meade County, Kentucky.1 He was the son of Nancy Catherine Simmons.2 Joseph Ashcraft died 17 July 1906, Cotton County, Oklahoma at age 34 years, 6 months and 12 days.1
Records from Oklahoma regarding Nellie's parents is very different from this.
Notably, Joseph Ashcraft died in 1906. His children, whose mother is identified as Ella Hugh Strange (the surname of her second husband, and step-father to the two children, Nellie Blanche Ashcraft and Joe Philip Ashcraft) became part of a custody battle in Jackson, Oklahoma, beginning 11 July 1917.
G A Strange, the step-father, asks that he be appointed guardian.
Relatives of the two children residing in Jackson County are "J B Smith, Mrs Sadie Brown, A L Smith and Mary E Smith, all of Headrick, Oklahoma."

On an undated document G A Strange, referencing his previous application to become guardian, notes that one W B[C] Ashcraft of Brandenburg, Kentucky, uncle of said minor children has come to this state to look after their interests and that all the relatives agreed that W D Ashcraft should become their guardian and they will move to Kentucky. Filed Aug 14, 1917.

He was then ordered to turn over all money and property.

A previous case, regarding the estate of Ella Hugh Strange notes that she died 7 Jul 1917. She was a resident of Jackson County, Oklahoma. Left property and improvements "this property is held in the name of Graland [sic] A Strange and is held in trust by the said Garland A Strange for the benefit if Ella Hugh Strange, said property belonging to her ..."
Names in the document are:
G A Strange, husband of the deceased, 48 years of age, Humphreys, Oklahoma
Nellie Blanche Ashcraft, daughter, 15 years of age, Humphreys, Oklahoma
Joe Phillip Ashcraft, son of deceased, 11 years of age, Humphreys, Oklahoma.

She left the entire estate, in thirds, to these three.

The 1910 census has Ella Strange, 34, Nellie Branch Ashcraft, 8, Herman C Ashcraft and Hugh P Ashcraft, 4, living in the household of J B Smith, 65, A L Smith, 27, and a Smith child, Mary Edna, 10.
A L Smith, 27, Ella Strange, 34, adn Mary Edna Smith, 10 are all listed as children of J B Smith. Nellie, Herman, and Hugh P, are grandchildren.
There's a name problem, as Joe Phillip Ashcraft is not present. He is probably "Hugh."

There is a marriage between Ella H Smith and Joseph Ashcraft, 24 Jan 1900.

So, it appears that the wife and mother here is a Smith, and died in 1917. Who Nancy Catherine Simmons is I don't know.
Need to take another look at Meet Your Ancestors: Some Descendants of Edward Philpott (1597?-1678), William Barton (1605?-1674), Francis Posey (1600-1654), William Smoote (ca 1597-1673), Moses Hobart (1709-1780), and Moses Hubbard (1774-1856)"

OK, got it. Nancy Catherine (Simmons) Ashcraft was Joseph Ashcraft's mother.

The 1870 census of Ashcrafts, Meade County, Kentucky, next door to John (46) and Pamelia (39) Brown, we find
Elijah B Ashcraft, 34, Nannie C, 28, Allen, 10, James W, 8, George S, 6, William D, 4, Christopher, 1.

In 1880, Nancy, 37, is widowed, and additional children are Joseph, 8, Amelia, 8, and Elijah, 5.

So, there's an intervening generation here.
