     Harriet Wherry Gray was born on 30 August 1875 Cumberland County, Virginia.1,2 She was the daughter of John Taylor Gray and Julia Randolph Trent. Harriet Wherry Gray died 8 May 1963 , in Wilson, Wilson County, North Carolina at age 87.2 She was buried Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, Richmond City County, Virginia; John Taylor Gray, February 13,1829, August 24, 1876.

     She has been called Auntie.

A clerk in the military in WW I, she was known to the public as "Hattie” and in the family as “Auntie”, pronounced “ontie.” Some of her "charges" during the war gifted her with what was known as "trench art," in this case two shell casings hammered and chased to interesting designs. These have been turned into table lamps and are with her grand-nephews, John T. and Richard G. Guthrie.
